DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce a new informal seminar series\, the City Tech Community Roundtable. The goal of the new series is to bring together faculty and students from all disciplines at the college and contribute to building\, or re-building\, the nurturing intellectual community that the last three years have made it difficult to have. Our meetings will be in person\, on the fourth Thursday of the month\, from 1 to 2pm\, in N227. You are welcome to bring your own lunch\, but we’ll provide coffee and cookies! \n\n\n\nRather than a traditional seminar format\, we encourage shorter 15- 20-minute informal talks (with or without slides)\, with a few speakers for each event; faculty and student teams are particularly encouraged to participate. We are interested in any aspect of your research\, scholarship\, or creative activity: share a result\, test run a conference presentation\, solicit feedback or collaborators on a specific idea\, try out a funding pitch\, or simply tell us about something you find interesting\, and you want to share with your community. We only ask that you keep your presentation approachable for faculty and students in different disciplines. \n\n\n\nPlease nominate a colleague or let us know if you’d like to give a short talk by filling in this brief form. \n\n\n\nAll are welcome—please encourage your students and colleagues to come hear about the research and creativity of our campus community!

SUMMARY:U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)-Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Minority Research Grant Program (MRGP)
DESCRIPTION:Overview of Webinar:  \n\n\n\nMRGP provides funding opportunities to support health equity research conducted at: 1) Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); 2) Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs); 3) Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs); or 4) Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs). Through this funding opportunity\, the Minority Research Grant Program will make awards to eligible institutions. The purpose of theMRPG is to support researchers at minority serving institutions that are exploring how HHS can better meet the healthcare needs of CMS beneficiaries. The MRGP supports research on the discovery and characterization of health processes\, practices\, behaviors\, and burdens or issues related to CMS programs\, policies\, and operations\, that influence health equity. Funded research may comprehensively address the social determinants of health that drive or influence the barriers and opportunities populations described above experience related to CMS-supported benefits\, services\, and coverage. By focusing on understanding how inequities in communities impact health\, Funded research may also employ participatory methods that foster equitable engagement of affected communities in research\, such as convening and advisory board with community members\, community-based organizations\, and service providers. DESCRIPTION:This month Christopher Swift\, Humanities Department\, will present “Performing Empire: Ritual\, Spectacle\, and Theatre in Late Medieval Seville” In this talk\, theatre historian Christopher Swift discusses the upcoming publication of his monograph. “Performing Empire” traces an historical arc during the period of Christian rule of Seville from 1248 to the conquest of the New World\, arguing that public performance was a vital means for Christians\, Jews\, and Muslims to negotiate and reform interreligious relationships\, enact social controls\, and preserve communal memories. “Performing Empire” investigates the accumulation of affects and signs in the play space of theatre and the very real consequences of these creative explorations across three centuries of Castilian hegemony and empire-building. \n\n\n\nHybrid event — save the date and watch your email for details!

DESCRIPTION:Overview of Webinar:  \n\n\n\nThe National Science Foundation offers Postdoctoral Research Fellowships to provide opportunitiesfor recent doctoral graduates to obtain additional training\, to gain research experience under the sponsorship ofestablished scientists\, and to broaden their scientific horizons beyond their undergraduate and graduate training.Postdoctoral Fellowships are further designed to assist new scientists to direct their research efforts across traditionaldisciplinary lines and to avail themselves of unique research resources\, sites\, and facilities\, including at foreign locations. NSF seeks to promote the participation of scientists from all segments of the scientific community\, including those from underrepresented groups\, in its research programs and activities; the postdoctoral period is an important level of professional development in attaining this goal. NSF offers Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Polar Programs\, Earth Sciences\, Ocean Sciences\, Atmospheric and Geospatial Sciences\, Mathematical Sciences\, Astronomy and Astrophysical Sciences\, and Social Sciences. The NSF Engineering Directorate offer an engineering postdoctoral program (eFellows) for early-career PhDs in engineering fields. SUMMARY:Book Talk - Chemistry Professor Peter Spellane on the Industrial and Chemical History of Newtown Creek
DESCRIPTION:Chemical and Petroleum Industries at Newtown Creek (2022) blends history\, science\, and commerce along New York’s 19th-century waterfront. Inspiration for the book\, Professor Spellane explains\, began while participating alongside City Tech colleagues in an interdisciplinary 2008 National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant\, “Water and Work: The History and Ecology of the Brooklyn Waterfront.” Spellane’s study also draws on maps and period documents in collections at the New York Public Library\, the Brooklyn Historical Society\, the Cooper Union Library\, the New-York Historical Society\, the Library of Congress\, and other archives\, including a copy of an 1880s map of Newtown Creek in the library at the Brooklyn Historical Society that indicated waterfront locations of recognizable forerunners to several modern chemical and petroleum manufacturing companies.

If so\, you are invited to participate in a meaningful and rewarding college-level service opportunity – an official LGBTQIA+ Faculty+Staff Collective. We are looking for anyone who would like to be part of this work at City Tech\, whether you are a member of the LGBTQIA+ community or an ally. In 2022-2023\,  \n\n\n\nCity Tech was awarded $40\,000 to serve City Tech’s LGBTQIA+ students\, faculty\, and staff\, and we have been invited to apply for support in subsequent years as well. The funding comes from CUNY’s LGBTQIA+ Consortium (with support from LaGuardia Community College and the New York City Council and the Council’s LGBTQIA+ Caucus). The LGBTQIA+ Consortium is a CUNY-wide group that facilitates the archiving of LGBTQIA+ history across New York and supports LGBTQIA+ training\, education\, and programming. SUMMARY:NIH R15 Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) for Undergraduate-Focused Institutions
DESCRIPTION:Overview of Webinar:  \n\n\n\nThe purpose of AREA is to support small scale research grants at institutions that do not receive substantial funding from the NIH\, with an emphasis on providing biomedical research experiences primarily for undergraduate students and enhancing the research environment at applicant institutions. Eligible institutions must award baccalaureate science degrees and have received no more than $6 million dollars per year of NIH support (in both direct and indirect costs) in 4 of the last 7 fiscal years. The AREA program will enable qualified scientists to receive support for small-scale research projects. Principal investigators supported under the AREA program will benefit from the opportunity to conduct independent research; the grantee institution will benefit from a research environment strengthened through AREA grants; and the students at recipient institutions will benefit from exposure to and participation in scientific research in the biomedical sciences so that they consider careers in biomedical research. DESCRIPTION:REQUEST FOR PROPOSALSSubmission Deadline: January 30\, 2023 (5:00 pm EST) \n\n\n\nHate crimes in major U.S. cities have risen by double‐digit percentage increases over the past two years. Bias‐motivated attacks have frequently targeted Asian Americans\, Blacks\, Jews\, Latinos\, Muslims\, and members of the LGBTQI+ community. While Congress passes legislation aimed at combating hate crimes\, institutions of higher education have a responsibility to be proactive in developing local college communities of trust\, understanding\, and inclusion. \n\n\n\nThe Chancellor allocated new funding to support strategic efforts to confront religious and ethnic discrimination on CUNY campuses. Sharing CUNY’s commitment to diversity and inclusiveness\, New York City College of Technology (NYCCT) celebrates the many ethnicities and cultures represented by our faculty\, staff\, and students\, and condemns acts of hate.  \n\n\n\nFaculty\, staff\, and student groups are invited to submit proposals that serve the whole college community and demonstrate responsiveness to the recent uptick in anti‐Asian hate\, antisemitism\, racism\, and other forms of discrimination. \n\n\n\nEligibility \n\n\n\nNYCCT full time faculty and staff are eligible to apply; student groups wishing to apply should be supported by a faculty or staff advisor.  \n\n\n\nAvailable Funding \n\n\n\nA minimum of four (4) grants of up to $3\,000 will be awarded.  A total of $12\,000 in funding is available and will be administered through the NYCCT Business Office. \n\n\n\nProposal Due Date \n\n\n\nProposals are to be submitted by 5:00 pm on Monday\, January 30\, 2023. Proposals should be emailed to Provost@citytech.cuny.edu. \n\n\n\nProposals submitted after this deadline are considered late and may not be accepted. \n\n\n\nAward Period \n\n\n\nAwardees will be notified in February 2023 and funds must be used before June 30\, 2023. \n\n\n\nProposal Format \n\n\n\nEach proposal submitted to this RFP must include (A) Campus Climate Proposal Summary Form (B) Proposal Narrative\, and (C) Budget Template. Include plans to disseminate information about the event to the college community\, and anticipated attendance; proposed events should anticipate at least 50 attendees\n\n\n\n\n\nA brief explanation of how the proposed work responds to the recent uptick in anti‐ Asian hate\, antisemitism\, and/or other forms of discrimination\n\n\n\nA summary of how the proposed activities align with the Proposal Category or Categories\n\n\n\nA description of expected impact\, deliverables\, and outcomes within the funding period\n\n\n\nAn evaluation plan\n\n\n\nA brief budget narrative linking costs to activities\n\n\n\n\nIn accordance with the RFP issued by CUNY for Campus Climate Support Grants\, Campus Group Proposals should address one or more of the following proposal categories: \n\n\n\nProposal Categories \n\n\n\n\nCampus Climate & Communications\n\n\n\n\n\nCommunity events\, public programs\, art projects\, and podcasts focused on unity\, campus climate\, justice\, awareness\, wellness\n\n\n\nPrograms and activities promoting cross‐cultural understandings among members of the Asian American\, Black\, Jewish\, Latino\, Muslim\, and LGBTQI+ communities\, among others\n\n\n\nDifficult conversations\, dialogues\, town halls\, and discussions about intersecting religious\, ethnic\, and cultural identities\n\n\n\nInterdisciplinary partnerships with community‐based organizations\n\n\n\nCommunity‐wide messaging about existing policies that protect the rights of all students and employees\n\n\n\nCampus climate surveys with specific reference to concerns pertaining to religious and ethnic discrimination\n\n\n\n\n\nTraining & Development for Multiple Stakeholders\n\n\n\n\n\nLocal expansion of training related to diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and belonging\, incorporating faith‐based identities along with ethnic\, racial\, and other identities\n\n\n\nTraining on how to incorporate inclusive practices in leadership\n\n\n\nTraining on how to protest respectfully\n\n\n\nTraining on student engagement strategies\n\n\n\nTraining on how to plan for controversial speakers\n\n\n\nInclusive\, culturally responsive\, trauma‐informed pedagogy seminars\n\n\n\n\n\nStudent Engagement & Support\n\n\n\n\n\nStudent resource & support spaces\, affinity groups\, community forums\, book clubs\n\n\n\nCollaborative efforts with student leaders to develop strategies promoting a sense of belonging on campus and building a community that is free of discrimination against faith‐based identities along with ethnic\, racial\, and other identities\n\n\n\n\n\nAcademic & Co‐Curricular Programs\n\n\n\n\n\nPrograms that foster understanding and are reflective of the ethnic and cultural diversity of CUNY students\n\n\n\nCourses that help students to understand discrimination more broadly and include representatives across a spectrum of marginalized groups\n\n\n\nPlace‐based and experiential learning that enables relationship‐building through the practice of mindful listening and the exploration of personal narratives\n\n\n\nCohort‐based programs that create space for communicating across differences and skill‐ building related to navigating cultural tensions as well as religious\, ethnic\, and race power dynamics\n\n\n\n\n(C) NYCCT Campus Group Proposal Budget Template – View template \n\n\n\nAll proposed costs should be included on the attached Excel template.  Expenses should be reasonable and necessary to complete the project activities. \n\n\n\nFringe benefits are waived for this RFP.  Any salaries\, wages\, or stipends budgeted should be clearly justified in the narrative.  \n\n\n\nAllowable costs include consultant fees\, meeting and event costs\, supplies\, marketing and outreach\, travel\, and student stipends. \n\n\n\nFinal Report \n\n\n\nA final report will be due to the Provost by June 30\, 2023.  More information will be provided to awardees. \n\n\n\nContact Information \n\n\n\nQuestions about this funding opportunity should be directed to Provost@citytech.cuny.edu.

SUMMARY:NSF Geosciences Opportunities for Leadership in Diversity (GOLD-EN)
DESCRIPTION:Overview of Webinar: The program supports activities that will develop unique approaches or bring to scale current efforts to increase and sustain the inclusion of individuals from diverse backgrounds in the geoscience education and research community. Proposals are invited that address elements in the following two areas: Professional Development and Geoscience Capacity Building at Minority Serving Institutions.
