SUMMARY:NSF Technology\, Innovation and Partnerships (TIP) Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Overview of Webinar: This new NSF directorate — first in more than 30 years — builds upon the agency’s commitment over seven decades to serve as a beacon of U.S. innovation\, advancing the frontiers of research and education across all fields of science and engineering. TIP is a critical first step that will accelerate the development of new technologies and products that improve Americans’ way of life\, grow the economy\, create new jobs\, and strengthen and sustain U.S. competitiveness for decades to come. TIP’s mission is to harnesses the nation’s vast and diverse talent pool to advance critical and emerging technologies\, address pressing societal and economic challenges\, and accelerate the translation of research results from lab to market and society. This webinar provides an overview of all funding opportunities offered by this new directorate. It will highlight how in contrast to many existing NSF programs that primarily focus on scientific innovation\, TIP programs include a strong emphasis on meaningfully engaging the consumers of research outcomes in informing and shaping the research questions; prototyping and piloting of research-based solutions (i.e.\, co-design and co-creation); and translating research results to practice\, entrepreneurship\, and direct economic growth. The program further differentiates itself from traditional NSF approaches through the nature and types of partnerships expected; the technology-translation and workforce-development outputs that will be tracked and assessed; and the budgets of the expected NSF Engines\, which are an order of magnitude greater than traditional NSF center-scale awards. \n\n\n\nPresenter: John Tsapogas\, Director\, RFCUNY-APPS \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\nIn connection with the RFCUNY Wednesday Brown Bag Research Webinar – Academic Year 2022/2023

SUMMARY:NSF Geosciences Opportunities for Leadership in Diversity (GOLD-EN)
DESCRIPTION:Overview of Webinar: The program supports activities that will develop unique approaches or bring to scale current efforts to increase and sustain the inclusion of individuals from diverse backgrounds in the geoscience education and research community. Proposals are invited that address elements in the following two areas: Professional Development and Geoscience Capacity Building at Minority Serving Institutions. The NSF Geosciences directorate encourages projects that will develop efforts and training that focus on the creation of BAJEDI (Belonging Accessibility Justice Equity Diversity and Inclusion) leaders through scaling of model professional development (PD) programs\, identifying barriers that exist within academia and/or the geosciences that prevent the development of diversity champions\, and the employment of strategies that will create and sustain cohorts of diversity leaders to maximize collective impact in the geoscience ecosystem. \n\n\n\nTargeted Audience: CUNY Geosciences facultyPresenter: John Tsapogas\, Director\, RFCUNY-APPSWebinar ID: 809-040-075 \n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:NIH R15 Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) for Undergraduate-Focused Institutions
DESCRIPTION:Overview of Webinar: \n\n\n\nThe purpose of AREA is to support small scale research grants at institutions that do not receive substantial funding from the NIH\, with an emphasis on providing biomedical research experiences primarily for undergraduate students and enhancing the research environment at applicant institutions. Eligible institutions must award baccalaureate science degrees and have received no more than $6 million dollars per year of NIH support (in both direct and indirect costs) in 4 of the last 7 fiscal years. The AREA program will enable qualified scientists to receive support for small-scale research projects. Principal investigators supported under the AREA program will benefit from the opportunity to conduct independent research; the grantee institution will benefit from a research environment strengthened through AREA grants; and the students at recipient institutions will benefit from exposure to and participation in scientific research in the biomedical sciences so that they consider careers in biomedical research. The AREA program emphasizes the engagement and inclusion of undergraduates in research. \n\n\n\nTargeted Audience: CUNY Biomedical Sciences facultyPresenters: John Tsapogas\, Director\, RFCUNY-APPS and Tatiana Emmanouil\, Professor of Psychology\, Baruch CollegeWebinar ID: 592-547-155 \n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Physics Department presents Dissipation\, drag\, and diffusion in 1D solids
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Aleksandr Rodin\, Yale-NUS College \n\n\n\nSolid-state batteries have the potential to play an integral part in applications where traditional liquid-electrolyte cells are not ideal. A vital component of these batteries is a solid electrolyte: an electronic insulator capable of carrying ions between the anode and the cathode. Finding an optimal material for this component is one of the main problems in this research field. Most of the theoretical research is performed using molecular dynamics simulations which\, although very powerful\, can obscure relevant physical mechanisms of ionic transport. On the other hand\, simple toy models can fill a complementary role by making it possible to explore physics in analytically-tractable systems. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin via Zoom

SUMMARY:Scholarship for the Public Good: Paths to Open Access Online
DESCRIPTION:Open access scholarly literature—roughly\, scholarly works that are online and free of charge for all—has developed over the past 20 years from wild idea to widespread reality. Open access journals\, books\, and repositories are now established parts of the scholarly ecosystem\, and many consider near-universal open access to be inevitable. But publishing itself is not cost-free\, so how can open access be achieved? There are many possible paths\, some now common\, some more experimental. Which of these paths align with our values as researchers\, and with the mission of the Graduate Center and CUNY as a whole? Which empower the research community? Which should we pursue\, and which should we eschew? \n\n\n\nThe first event in the “Scholarship for the Public Good” series (learn more below) will explore various paths to open access. The event will feature three experts: \n\n\n\n\nPeter Suber (Harvard University) will describe the institutional open access policies passed by the faculties of Harvard and many other universities.\n\n\n\nHeather Paxson (MIT) will discuss the transition of society journal Cultural Anthropology from subscription-based to open access\, and its ongoing quest to fund publication without article processing charges (APCs).\n\n\n\nLeslie Chan (University of Toronto) will examine high-profit publishers’ problematic approaches to open access (high APCs\, vertical integration\, and more).\n\n\n\n\nScholarship for the Public Good Event Series \n\n\n\n“We believe that knowledge is a public good.” This statement of institutional values is emblazoned on the Graduate Center website. But there are many ways to interpret the statement\, and many ways to enact the belief. How can we move from words to action—or to greater action—in the context of our scholarship? \n\n\n\n\nHow can we ensure that the public\, as a matter of course\, has cost-free access to scholarly works authored by Graduate Center researchers?\n\n\n\nWhat changes could we collectively bring about if we centered our values in decisions about where we publish\, peer review\, and serve in editorial roles?\n\n\n\nHow can the library and institution as a whole support these efforts and resist high-profit publishers’ exploitative practices?\n\n\n\nHow might we reimagine “impact” and rework systems of evaluation and reward?\n\n\n\nHow does considering these questions and contributing to these changes benefit our students\, our colleagues\, our fields\, and the public?\n\n\n\n\nHosted by the CUNY Graduate Center’s Mina Rees Library and the Provost’s Office\, the “Scholarship for the Public Good” event series will examine these questions and more\, and explore possible ways that everyone in the Graduate Center community—faculty\, students\, staff\, and administrators—can foster a positive\, public-minded ecosystem of scholarship. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Works in the Works series: Epistemological Constructions
DESCRIPTION:Epistemological Constructions: The Eternal Struggle with the Real and Virtual in Architecture \n\n\n\nThe built environment masks a multitude of virtual manifestations of itself that were engaged in the course of its formation. As an operation embedded within the discipline of design\, the act of making collapses the virtual into the real\, and yet remnants of these simulations inform the production of the space of a building. This talk will explore the history of theories of drawing and craft\, simulation through the analog and digital model\, and parametric and algorithmic processes\, forming a conceptual foundation for contemporary techniques. Current architectural theories of design and construction explore computation as a tool of fabrication\, mixed realities in visualizations\, and the breaking role of artificial intelligence in design\, challenging the notion of what is real and what is virtual at the limit of the design process. \n\n\n\nWhere: In person: L-631 and Live via Zoom \n\n\n\n\nView Flyer

SUMMARY:International Mother Language Day
DESCRIPTION:As a space dedicated to language\, the Writing Center looks forward to celebrating International Mother Language Day on Tuesday\, Feb. 21st from 1pm-3pm in L-632 (the faculty lounge in the Library Building). This day marks the importance of multilingual education and the value of bringing more languages into public life. To celebrate\, we will have a line-up of performances/readings in mother languages by students\, faculty\, and staff\, as well as time for attendees to share if they are inspired to do so. Refreshments will be provided. If you would like to perform\, please reach out to writingcenter@citytech.cuny.edu. \n\n\n\nAt the City Tech Writing Center\, we want to celebrate the linguistic diversity that currently inhabits our campus with more than 85 different languages spoken. Languages contain ways of knowing and being that express visions of the world from a particular community. By celebrating our Mother Tongues\, we contribute to building inclusive knowledge societies and preserving cultural heritage that might otherwise be lost.  \n\n\n\n\nView Flyer

SUMMARY:Climate Change\, Human Health\, and Resiliency Forum
DESCRIPTION:Moderator:  John Tsapogas\, RFCUNY Office of Award Pre-Proposal Support (APPS) \n\n\n\nThe Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) is interested in continuing its ties with the City University of New York (CUNY) and we are interested in building opportunities with researchers in Japan in areas related to science\, engineering\, and health.  As part of this relationship\, we are organizing a joint forum on a theme of mutual interest. On February 24\, 2023\, we are convening a forum titled Climate Change\, Human Health\, and Resiliency. Collaboration opportunities with Japanese colleagues is of course the focus but raising the profile (and attractiveness) of the intersection of these three thematic areas at CUNY is also a desired outcome of the convening.  We’re planning on having sessions on US Federal agency (NIH and NSF) funding opportunities\, talks about JSPS and Japanese funding opportunities that support this work;  a session where Japanese researchers share their perspectives on their research; and a panel made up of CUNY faculty and a graduate student where they also make research presentations.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails\n\n\n\nRSVP

SUMMARY:LGBTQIA+ Faculty+Staff Collective
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in supporting LGBTQIA+ students\, faculty\, and staff at City Tech? Would you like to be part of creating a more welcoming and inclusive environment for all gender identities and expressions and sexualities? If so\, you are invited to participate in a meaningful and rewarding college-level service opportunity – an official LGBTQIA+ Faculty+Staff Collective. We are looking for anyone who would like to be part of this work at City Tech\, whether you are a member of the LGBTQIA+ community or an ally. In 2022-2023\,  \n\n\n\nCity Tech was awarded $40\,000 to serve City Tech’s LGBTQIA+ students\, faculty\, and staff\, and we have been invited to apply for support in subsequent years as well. The funding comes from CUNY’s LGBTQIA+ Consortium (with support from LaGuardia Community College and the New York City Council and the Council’s LGBTQIA+ Caucus). The LGBTQIA+ Consortium is a CUNY-wide group that facilitates the archiving of LGBTQIA+ history across New York and supports LGBTQIA+ training\, education\, and programming. With this funding\, City Tech is now officially a member of the Consortium and will be using the money on a range of programming and initiatives\, including: \n\n\n\n\nEleven student internships\n\n\n\nLGBTQIA+ Student Infrastructure Initiative\n\n\n\nA Conversation on Gender in the Classroom Workshop for Faculty\n\n\n\nLGBTQIA+ Library Collection Development\n\n\n\nGender & Sexuality Studies Program Building\n\n\n\nLGBTQIA+ Literary Arts Festival speaker\n\n\n\nMeet The Pros with Rob Sanders and Jamey Christoph\, the creative team behind Stonewall A Building. an Uprising. a Revolution\n\n\n\nStop the Hate: Safer Space Training\n\n\n\n\nCity Tech already offers one of the few Academic Minors in the CUNY system focusing on an interdisciplinary approach to Gender & Sexuality Studies\, and there is so much possibility for City Tech to be a welcoming home for LGBTQIA+ community! If you are interested in being part of any aspect of this initiative\, please consider joining the LGBTQIA+ Faculty+Staff Collective. \n\n\n\nWe will be having an informational meeting in Faculty Commons\, 300 Jay Street\, Namm Hall N227\, on Tuesday\, February 28th at 1:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nPlease RSVP here to indicate whether you plan to attend in person or via Zoom: \n\n\n\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/lgbtqia-facultystaff-info-session-tickets-543198329827

SUMMARY:Book Talk - Chemistry Professor Peter Spellane on the Industrial and Chemical History of Newtown Creek
DESCRIPTION:Chemical and Petroleum Industries at Newtown Creek (2022) blends history\, science\, and commerce along New York’s 19th-century waterfront. Inspiration for the book\, Professor Spellane explains\, began while participating alongside City Tech colleagues in an interdisciplinary 2008 National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant\, “Water and Work: The History and Ecology of the Brooklyn Waterfront.” Spellane’s study also draws on maps and period documents in collections at the New York Public Library\, the Brooklyn Historical Society\, the Cooper Union Library\, the New-York Historical Society\, the Library of Congress\, and other archives\, including a copy of an 1880s map of Newtown Creek in the library at the Brooklyn Historical Society that indicated waterfront locations of recognizable forerunners to several modern chemical and petroleum manufacturing companies.
