DESCRIPTION:The Spencer Foundation works to investigate ways in which education can be improved around the world. There is a great dedication to research\, as it is necessary for the improvement of education. The Spencer Foundation supports research programs in high-quality investigations of education. By awarding research grants\, and fellowships the foundation strengthens the connections in education research\, policy and practice through communications and networking. The foundation awards a series of prestigious fellowships to early career education researchers\, typically pre-tenured professors at research institutions. Each fellowship is for a total of $55\,000 and is for one or two years depending on the preference of the recipient. The fellowship relieves the researcher from a year’s worth of teaching responsibilities to pursue an innovative and important education research project. The foundation also awards a series of prestigious fellowships to doctoral students completing dissertation research in any area of education research. DESCRIPTION:To combat the continued assault on Black history and culture\, and especially books by Black authors\, AFR and the Library are hosting a Banned Black Book Month for Black History Month 2024.  We are soliciting the names and titles of books by Black authors that have been banned in any capacity (regionally\, educationally\, etc.). SUMMARY:City Tech's Spring 2024 Emerging Scholars Program
DESCRIPTION:EMERGING SCHOLARS PROGRAM SPRING 2024 APPLICATION \n\n\n\nThe Emerging Scholars Program (ESP) provides a $500 stipend for full-time students (enrolled for 12 or more credits) and a $250 stipend for part-time students (enrolled for 11 or fewer credits) for conducting research with a faculty member. If there is a student that you would like to work with\, please provide them with this information and encourage them to apply. This is an opportunity to advance your own scholarship while providing valuable experience to a promising student. All participating faculty receive a certificate of appreciation.  \n\n\n\nNote for Research Projects Engaging Freshman Students  \n\n\n\nFaculty mentors who engage in a research project with any incoming freshman student (regardless of major) will receive a stipend of $500 (for each freshman student mentored).  Students will receive $500 (and may receive an additional $300 upon competition of CITI certification and attending workshops\, if they have not previously received a stipend from the JLM RISE Program). This opportunity is supported by the Robin Hood Foundation. We welcome part-time and full-time faculty to consider mentoring an incoming first year student in a research project this semester. Group projects with a few first-year students are welcomed\, since students can get a sense of belonging to a community.   \n\n\n\nPlease note that the Emerging Scholars Program is open to ALL students (students from all academic levels are welcome to apply)\, but compensation for mentors only applies to mentoring first year freshman students.  \n\n\n\nEmerging Scholars Program application deadline:  Friday\, February 23\, 2024.  \n\n\n\nApplication Process:Both incoming first year students and all other students must complete:  \n\n\n\nPart I of the application:https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/EmergingScholarsSp2024 \n\n\n\nPart II of the Application is here.  \n\n\n\nFaculty and student(s) must complete the PREA (Pre-Research Experience Application)  \n\n\n\nProgram requirements for students include attending a mandatory orientation meeting\, completion of the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)- Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) online training\, attending four professional development workshops\, and submitting an abstract and presenting a poster at the Dr. Janet Liou-Mark Honors and Undergraduate Research Poster Presentation session. DESCRIPTION:The City of New York has generously provided $7 million in capital funding for CUNY to invest in equipment\, infrastructure\, and other resources that will enhance our academic and training programs related to the Green Economy workforce. \n\n\n\nPlease review the Request for Proposals (RFP) which outlines the details of this opportunity. Generative AI (GenAI) is a subfield of AI focused on developing models that can generate new content\, such as images\, text\, audio\, or even video. ChatGPT is a GenAI model. This talk explains the basics of GenAI and how it differs from other traditional AI and machine learning models. It describes GenAI’s immense potential in various domains\, including art generation\, content creation\, text completion\, design\, and more. Moreover\, it explains GenAI limitations and associated risks. DESCRIPTION:Using an NPR segment of Pop Culture Happy Hour\, namely\, “The hip-hop verse that changed my life\,” as a point of departure\, AFR’s “‘Bring the Noise’: Hip Hop at 50 and Til Infinity” is an interactive hip hop exhibit that celebrates the 50th anniversary of hip hop.  It will feature hip hop memorabilia\, including books\, magazines\, albums\, etc. that reflect the influence of hip hop on visual culture\, identity\, and community.  AFR hopes to include the voices of City Tech’s community by soliciting artwork\, essays\, poems\, and other creative writing to be included in a catalog that will accompany the exhibit. All submissions will be included and credited to the author. \n\n\n\nCASH PRIZES FOR THE BEST ENTRIES!!! \n\n\n\nThe exhibit will open the week of April 15\, 2024\, and will coincide with our Spring 2024 event\, “Supa Dupa Fly: LGBTQ+ Hip Hop Til Infinity” to be held on April 16\, 2024. DESCRIPTION:The Brooklyn Waterfront: The Innovation Coast?\n\n\n\nIn the year before the Covid pandemic\, there was the possibility that Amazon would open a second headquarters in New York City.  Developers from around the city tried many different ways to attract the company to their boroughs. There were some in Brooklyn\, for instance\, who thought labeling parts of the waterfront as the “Innovation Coast” might help in their efforts. It didn’t; Amazon didn’t locate its headquarters in New York.  But given what is happening these days in places like the Brooklyn Navy Yard and the Brooklyn Army Terminal\, that name\, Innovation Coast\, might be useful as climate-related startups are encouraged and incentivized to locate there. \n\n\n\nJoin us on the evening of May 1 to hear a panel of speakers from some of these startups\, led by the Chief Strategy Officer of the New York City Economic Development Corporation\, speak about the City’s program to promote the development of climate-related companies. The workshop will be offered twice: \n\n\n\n\nFriday\, May 3 – 10am to 11:50am OR 2pm to 3:50pm\n\n\n\nIn person – A105\n\n\n\nSeats are limited – please register by April 26 HERE \n\n\n\n\n\nView Flyer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere is an overwhelming body of research indicating that undergraduate scholars who participate in High Impact Practices such as research experiences benefit significantly from their interactions with their faculty mentors. The roles that faculty play as mentors form a multifaceted model that follows a specific mentoring cycle. In this workshop\, we will explore the main faces of mentoring\, in particular those that make it holistic\, the stages of a mentor-protégé relationship\, and recommendations by the National Academies to promote mentoring as a science. The workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Benjamin C. Flores (UTEP)\, Dr. Audrey Boklage (UT)\, and Dr. Karina Vielma (UTSA).
