DESCRIPTION:The Brooklyn Waterfront: The Innovation Coast?\n\n\n\nIn the year before the Covid pandemic\, there was the possibility that Amazon would open a second headquarters in New York City.  Developers from around the city tried many different ways to attract the company to their boroughs. There were some in Brooklyn\, for instance\, who thought labeling parts of the waterfront as the “Innovation Coast” might help in their efforts. It didn’t; Amazon didn’t locate its headquarters in New York.  But given what is happening these days in places like the Brooklyn Navy Yard and the Brooklyn Army Terminal\, that name\, Innovation Coast\, might be useful as climate-related startups are encouraged and incentivized to locate there. \n\n\n\nJoin us on the evening of May 1 to hear a panel of speakers from some of these startups\, led by the Chief Strategy Officer of the New York City Economic Development Corporation\, speak about the City’s program to promote the development of climate-related companies. The roles that faculty play as mentors form a multifaceted model that follows a specific mentoring cycle. In this workshop\, we will explore the main faces of mentoring\, in particular those that make it holistic\, the stages of a mentor-protégé relationship\, and recommendations by the National Academies to promote mentoring as a science. DESCRIPTION:Overview: The NEA was established by Congress in 1965 and it’s an independent federal agency that is the largest funder of the arts and arts education in communities nationwide\, and a catalyst of public and private support for the arts. By advancing equitable opportunities for arts participation and practice\, the NEA fosters and sustains an environment in which the arts benefit everyone in the United States. The NEA’s primary activities include grantmaking to nonprofit arts organizations\, public arts agencies and organizations\, colleges and universities\, federally recognized tribal communities or tribes\, and individual writers and translators. Grant applications are reviewed by panels of arts experts and individuals from across the country. All grants must be matched one-to-one by non-federal sources\, except for grants to individuals. SUMMARY:Works in the Works: What Justifies a Health Law or Policy?
DESCRIPTION:The Humanities Department in its Works in the Works series has the following presentation: \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Prof. Robert MacDougall\, Social Science Department \n\n\n\nTitle: What Justifies a Health Law or Policy? Two Views \n\n\n\nAbstract: What justifies a health law or policy? What makes it good rather than bad\, right rather than wrong? One kind of answer to this question refers to our moral duties: a law or policy is good or right if it enforces or incentivizes us to fulfill our moral duties. But I argue that this common view is mistaken. I give four arguments against this view and develop a very basic Kantian alternative to it. I argue that rights—rather than moral duties—should be considered as the normative basis for all law and policy\, including laws and policies relating to human health. I illustrate the differences between the two approaches by discussing laws governing physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia. DESCRIPTION:The CUNY Office of Research is re-launching the Junior Faculty Research Award in Science and Engineering (JFRASE) funding opportunity this fall. This year\, we have restructured the JFRASE in collaboration with the ASRC to build on the success of the NSF CAREER Bootcamp workshops.  \n\n\n\nThe 2024-25 round of the JFRASE competition will support 5-7 early career faculty with a course release\, one month of summer salary\, and discretionary funds. This award package requires full participation in the 2025 ASRC NSF CAREER Bootcamp. The goal is to enable participants to write a competitive NSF CAREER proposal while developing transferrable grant writing skills. \n\n\n\nThe JFRASE is designed to give faculty time and resources to conceptualize high risk/high reward research projects and to generate the preliminary data required for major external awards. DESCRIPTION:As we prepare for another exciting year of Undergraduate Research\, we certainly would like to thank all of our colleagues who have been research mentors for our students\, and we would certainly like to encourage colleagues who have not engaged in undergraduate research mentoring at the college to please consider participating in this rich\, gratifying experience. The undergraduate research application period is now open; please\, therefore\, find below a critical message from our Undergraduate Research Team. Please direct any questions you may have to undergraduateresearch@citytech.cuny.edu. The team will respond quickly to your queries.  \n\n\n\nPlease find below how you can become a faculty mentor to undergraduate student-researchers at City Tech. The City Tech Undergraduate Research initiative offers several programs that allow students to get paid for completing a research project with a faculty mentor\, and we are always looking for more mentors to participate (and potentially get paid through these programs!). This is a great opportunity to meet students who are interested in the programs but do not yet have mentors.\n\n\n\nStudents can do research in any department that they are interested in; the research project does not have to be one from the students’ major.\n\n\n\n\nStep 2: Apply \n\n\n\n\nStudents will fill out part 1 of the application by themselves.\n\n\n\nStudents will fill out part 2 of the application to the program with their faculty mentor.\n\n\n\n\nStep 3: Research \n\n\n\n\nOnce students are accepted to their respective program\, with your mentorship they complete a research project over the course of the semester (the number of hours and when they work each week is determined by you and the student). This can be an individual or group project\, and it can be an ongoing project you already have or something new that they propose.\n\n\n\nDepending on the program that they apply to\, the commitment for the research project is either one semester (ESP) or one year  (CRSP\, CIRE). At the end of each semester\, students are expected to submit an abstract and a poster\, as well as attend a research symposium to present their work. We ask mentors to help review the posters and abstracts prior to student submission.\n\n\n\n\nThe application deadline (Part I and II) is Thursday\, September 26\, 2024. \n\n\n\nPart 2 for all of the applications are attached to this email\, please feel free to share these with your students! DESCRIPTION:Overview: NSF Postdoctoral Fellowships are designed to provide opportunities for recent doctoral graduates and postdoctoral researchers to gain research experience under the sponsorship of established scientists\, to broaden their scientific horizons beyond their undergraduate and graduate training\, and to engage in research activities at an significant time and level of their professional development. NSF offers Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in the Social Sciences\, STEM Education\, Biology\, Earth Sciences\, Ocean Sciences\, Atmospheric and Geospatial Sciences\, Mathematical Sciences\, Astronomy and Astrophysical Sciences\, and Polar Programs. The NSF Engineering Directorate offers an engineering postdoctoral program (eFellows) for early-career PhDs in engineering fields. The eFellows program is administered by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) with funding provided by the National Science Foundation. The webinar will also cover the CREST Postdoctoral Research Program (CREST-PRP) which provides two years of support for research experience and training for postdoctoral researchers at active CREST Centers. The goal of the CREST-PRP awards is to increase the workforce presence of individuals from groups underrepresented in STEM fields. CREST-PRP awards recognize investigators with significant potential and provide them with research experiences that broaden perspectives\, facilitate interdisciplinary interactions\, and prepares CREST-PRP scholars for positions of leadership within the scientific community.
