SUMMARY:2024-2025 Undergraduate Research Opportunities: Applications Now Open!
DESCRIPTION:As we prepare for another exciting year of Undergraduate Research\, we certainly would like to thank all of our colleagues who have been research mentors for our students\, and we would certainly like to encourage colleagues who have not engaged in undergraduate research mentoring at the college to please consider participating in this rich\, gratifying experience. The undergraduate research application period is now open; please\, therefore\, find below a critical message from our Undergraduate Research Team. Please direct any questions you may have to undergraduateresearch@citytech.cuny.edu. The team will respond quickly to your queries.  \n\n\n\nPlease find below how you can become a faculty mentor to undergraduate student-researchers at City Tech. The City Tech Undergraduate Research initiative offers several programs that allow students to get paid for completing a research project with a faculty mentor\, and we are always looking for more mentors to participate (and potentially get paid through these programs!). Below are the outlines of our programs that currently have open applications\, along with the steps that students can take to participate in the programs:  \n\n\n\nESP (Emerging Scholars Program) \n\n\n\n\nOne semester commitment (students can re-join each semester)\n\n\n\nOpen to any Major (must be City Tech full time/part time student)\n\n\n\nOpen to students at all academic levels (Freshmen\, Sophomores\, Juniors\, and Seniors)\n\n\n\n$500 for full time students\, $250 for part time payment upon full completion of the program\n\n\n\nFreshman Students can receive up to $800 (additional $300)\n\n\n\nFaculty mentors are eligible to receive $500 for any freshman students they mentor.\n\n\n\n\nCRSP (CUNY Research Scholars Program) \n\n\n\n\nOne Year commitment (including full-time work for Summer 2025)\, 400 hours of work over the course of the year\n\n\n\nFreshmen and Sophomores full-time students are eligible (must have less than 50 credits at time of application)\n\n\n\n$5000 payment over the course of the year\n\n\n\nOpen to all Majors\n\n\n\nApplicant must be a U.S. Citizen/Permanent Resident\n\n\n\nFaculty Mentors receive $1000 payment per mentored student in June 2025\n\n\n\n\nCIRE (CUNY Immersive Research Experience) \n\n\n\n\nOne Year commitment (including full time work for Summer 2025)\, 400 hours of work over the course of the year\n\n\n\nMust be full-time student in a STEM Major\n\n\n\nRising Juniors and Seniors eligible (Bachelors students with 60+ credits at time of application)\n\n\n\n$6000 payment over the course of the year\n\n\n\nApplicant must be a U.S. Citizen/Permanent Resident\n\n\n\nFaculty Mentors receive $1000 payment per mentored student in June 2025\n\n\n\n\nHere are the steps that we ask Faculty Mentors to take to apply and participate in the programs:  \n\n\n\nStep 1: Students find a Professor to be a Faculty Mentor (or you find students to mentor): \n\n\n\n\nWe have a list of current faculty mentors on our website (https://openlab.citytech.cuny.edu/undergraduateresearch/find-a-mentor/)\, and if you are interested in becoming a mentor\, we ask that you speak to your students during the first few weeks of school to see if any are interested in participating in a research project with you. You can find abstracts and posters from previous projects as examples on our website\, linked here (https://www.citytech.cuny.edu/research/).\n\n\n\nAttend the Virtual Research Mixer on September 19th at 12:30 PM – Zoom Link Here (https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcoduiuqTwuEt3Amb4_yqv6hThCaI9JVvK3#/registration). This is a great opportunity to meet students who are interested in the programs but do not yet have mentors.\n\n\n\nStudents can do research in any department that they are interested in; the research project does not have to be one from the students’ major.\n\n\n\n\nStep 2: Apply \n\n\n\n\nStudents will fill out part 1 of the application by themselves.\n\n\n\nStudents will fill out part 2 of the application to the program with their faculty mentor.\n\n\n\n\nStep 3: Research \n\n\n\n\nOnce students are accepted to their respective program\, with your mentorship they complete a research project over the course of the semester (the number of hours and when they work each week is determined by you and the student). This can be an individual or group project\, and it can be an ongoing project you already have or something new that they propose.\n\n\n\nDepending on the program that they apply to\, the commitment for the research project is either one semester (ESP) or one year  (CRSP\, CIRE). At the end of each semester\, students are expected to submit an abstract and a poster\, as well as attend a research symposium to present their work. We ask mentors to help review the posters and abstracts prior to student submission.\n\n\n\n\nThe application deadline (Part I and II) is Thursday\, September 26\, 2024. \n\n\n\nPart 2 for all of the applications are attached to this email\, please feel free to share these with your students! SUMMARY:RFCUNY Brown Bag Research Webinars: NSF Grant Programs for CUNY Postdoctoral Researchers
DESCRIPTION:Overview: NSF Postdoctoral Fellowships are designed to provide opportunities for recent doctoral graduates and postdoctoral researchers to gain research experience under the sponsorship of established scientists\, to broaden their scientific horizons beyond their undergraduate and graduate training\, and to engage in research activities at an significant time and level of their professional development. NSF offers Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in the Social Sciences\, STEM Education\, Biology\, Earth Sciences\, Ocean Sciences\, Atmospheric and Geospatial Sciences\, Mathematical Sciences\, Astronomy and Astrophysical Sciences\, and Polar Programs. The NSF Engineering Directorate offers an engineering postdoctoral program (eFellows) for early-career PhDs in engineering fields. The eFellows program is administered by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) with funding provided by the National Science Foundation. The webinar will also cover the CREST Postdoctoral Research Program (CREST-PRP) which provides two years of support for research experience and training for postdoctoral researchers at active CREST Centers. The goal of the CREST-PRP awards is to increase the workforce presence of individuals from groups underrepresented in STEM fields. CREST-PRP awards recognize investigators with significant potential and provide them with research experiences that broaden perspectives\, facilitate interdisciplinary interactions\, and prepares CREST-PRP scholars for positions of leadership within the scientific community. DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Farhan HasanSpace Telescope Science Institute\, Baltimore\, USA \n\n\n\nAbstract: On the largest scales\, the universe forms a vast “cosmic web” made up of filamentary strands connecting massive nodes\, with vast\, empty voids in between. While simulations have predicted this structure for decades\, observing it directly has been challenging due to the faintness of the gas in the cosmic web. In this talk\, I will present a novel method inspired by the growth patterns of the “slime mold” microorganism to model the cosmic web more effectively. Our Monte Carlo Physarum Machine (MCPM) model simulates galaxies as “food sources” and uses them to map out the cosmic matter distribution. Integrating MCPM with standard techniques improves our ability to identify large-scale filamentary structure substantially. Using the IllustrisTNG cosmological simulations\, we find that MCPM reveals two types of filaments: dense\, prominent ones and more diffuse\, weaker ones. The density of these filaments influences galaxy evolution. In the nearby universe\, galaxies near dense filaments are deprived of gas and stop forming stars\, while galaxies near diffuse filaments remain gas-rich and actively star-forming. However\, in the first ~2-4 billion years after the Big Bang\, this effect of the cosmic web is absent. Furthermore\, high filament gas density can also result in galaxies forming stars in their cores first\, a process called “inside-out growth.” Our findings suggest that inhospitable gaseous environments of dense filaments can result in physical mechanisms such as gas stripping from galaxies. Additionally\, the environment plays a major role in halting star formation in low-mass and satellite galaxies\, while internal processes dominate in high-mass and central galaxies. We also find that while dark matter in galaxies tends to align with nearby filaments\, stars lose this alignment early in their evolution. Finally\, I’ll discuss ongoing efforts to test these predictions using state-of-the-art observatories\, including the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Hubble Space Telescope. \n\n\n\n\nView Flyer

Taught by queer artist\, bilingual writer\, and community educator Ángel Escalante\, Queering La Lengua is a two-session workshop and group discussion on the non-normative uses of gender in the Spanish language. Join us for a fun time learning why\, when\, and how breaking the rules of gender in language is a natural and political fact of culture that can help us move together towards diversity and solidarity.
