SUMMARY:Works in the Works series: Epistemological Constructions
DESCRIPTION:Epistemological Constructions: The Eternal Struggle with the Real and Virtual in Architecture \n\n\n\nThe built environment masks a multitude of virtual manifestations of itself that were engaged in the course of its formation. As an operation embedded within the discipline of design\, the act of making collapses the virtual into the real\, and yet remnants of these simulations inform the production of the space of a building. This talk will explore the history of theories of drawing and craft\, simulation through the analog and digital model\, and parametric and algorithmic processes\, forming a conceptual foundation for contemporary techniques. Current architectural theories of design and construction explore computation as a tool of fabrication\, mixed realities in visualizations\, and the breaking role of artificial intelligence in design\, challenging the notion of what is real and what is virtual at the limit of the design process. \n\n\n\nWhere: In person: L-631 and Live via Zoom \n\n\n\n\nView Flyer

SUMMARY:International Mother Language Day
DESCRIPTION:As a space dedicated to language\, the Writing Center looks forward to celebrating International Mother Language Day on Tuesday\, Feb. 21st from 1pm-3pm in L-632 (the faculty lounge in the Library Building). This day marks the importance of multilingual education and the value of bringing more languages into public life. To celebrate\, we will have a line-up of performances/readings in mother languages by students\, faculty\, and staff\, as well as time for attendees to share if they are inspired to do so. Refreshments will be provided. If you would like to perform\, please reach out to writingcenter@citytech.cuny.edu. \n\n\n\nAt the City Tech Writing Center\, we want to celebrate the linguistic diversity that currently inhabits our campus with more than 85 different languages spoken. Languages contain ways of knowing and being that express visions of the world from a particular community. By celebrating our Mother Tongues\, we contribute to building inclusive knowledge societies and preserving cultural heritage that might otherwise be lost.  \n\n\n\n\nView Flyer

SUMMARY:Honors Project Mentor Invitation
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to consider mentoring talented students as part of City Tech’s Honors Scholars Program. City Tech encourages students who have demonstrated high academic achievement to undertake honors-level work in any course. Honors projects involve a substantial challenging assignment in addition to the standard requirements of the course (Note: Honors projects can be a research or a non-research project; for example\, photography\, writing an original computer program\, etc.). Specific expectations for honors credit in a regular course are negotiated between the student and professor and approved by both the department Chairperson and the Honors Scholars Program Director. Honors project credit is noted on the official student transcript. Please consider mentoring current Honors students in your course(s). \n\n\n\nIf you have a student who is eligible for the Honors Scholars Program (completed at least 12 credits at City Tech with a GPA of 3.4 or higher)\, please encourage that student to join the program and earn Honors credit in your course. \n\n\n\nWe have attached the form for honors credit in a regular course\, which is due Friday\, February 24. If you have any questions\, please refer to our FAQ page (https://honors.citytech.cuny.edu/faq/) and/or contact the Assistant Director of the Honors Scholars Program\, Dr. Amanda L. SUMMARY:Climate Change\, Human Health\, and Resiliency Forum
DESCRIPTION:Moderator:  John Tsapogas\, RFCUNY Office of Award Pre-Proposal Support (APPS) \n\n\n\nThe Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) is interested in continuing its ties with the City University of New York (CUNY) and we are interested in building opportunities with researchers in Japan in areas related to science\, engineering\, and health.  As part of this relationship\, we are organizing a joint forum on a theme of mutual interest. On February 24\, 2023\, we are convening a forum titled Climate Change\, Human Health\, and Resiliency. Collaboration opportunities with Japanese colleagues is of course the focus but raising the profile (and attractiveness) of the intersection of these three thematic areas at CUNY is also a desired outcome of the convening.  We’re planning on having sessions on US Federal agency (NIH and NSF) funding opportunities\, talks about JSPS and Japanese funding opportunities that support this work;  a session where Japanese researchers share their perspectives on their research; and a panel made up of CUNY faculty and a graduate student where they also make research presentations.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails\n\n\n\nRSVP

SUMMARY:LGBTQIA+ Faculty+Staff Collective
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in supporting LGBTQIA+ students\, faculty\, and staff at City Tech? Would you like to be part of creating a more welcoming and inclusive environment for all gender identities and expressions and sexualities? If so\, you are invited to participate in a meaningful and rewarding college-level service opportunity – an official LGBTQIA+ Faculty+Staff Collective. We are looking for anyone who would like to be part of this work at City Tech\, whether you are a member of the LGBTQIA+ community or an ally. In 2022-2023\,  \n\n\n\nCity Tech was awarded $40\,000 to serve City Tech’s LGBTQIA+ students\, faculty\, and staff\, and we have been invited to apply for support in subsequent years as well. The funding comes from CUNY’s LGBTQIA+ Consortium (with support from LaGuardia Community College and the New York City Council and the Council’s LGBTQIA+ Caucus). The LGBTQIA+ Consortium is a CUNY-wide group that facilitates the archiving of LGBTQIA+ history across New York and supports LGBTQIA+ training\, education\, and programming. With this funding\, City Tech is now officially a member of the Consortium and will be using the money on a range of programming and initiatives\, including: \n\n\n\n\nEleven student internships\n\n\n\nLGBTQIA+ Student Infrastructure Initiative\n\n\n\nA Conversation on Gender in the Classroom Workshop for Faculty\n\n\n\nLGBTQIA+ Library Collection Development\n\n\n\nGender & Sexuality Studies Program Building\n\n\n\nLGBTQIA+ Literary Arts Festival speaker\n\n\n\nMeet The Pros with Rob Sanders and Jamey Christoph\, the creative team behind Stonewall A Building. an Uprising. a Revolution\n\n\n\nStop the Hate: Safer Space Training\n\n\n\n\nCity Tech already offers one of the few Academic Minors in the CUNY system focusing on an interdisciplinary approach to Gender & Sexuality Studies\, and there is so much possibility for City Tech to be a welcoming home for LGBTQIA+ community! If you are interested in being part of any aspect of this initiative\, please consider joining the LGBTQIA+ Faculty+Staff Collective. \n\n\n\nWe will be having an informational meeting in Faculty Commons\, 300 Jay Street\, Namm Hall N227\, on Tuesday\, February 28th at 1:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nPlease RSVP here to indicate whether you plan to attend in person or via Zoom: \n\n\n\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/lgbtqia-facultystaff-info-session-tickets-543198329827

SUMMARY:Book Talk - Chemistry Professor Peter Spellane on the Industrial and Chemical History of Newtown Creek
DESCRIPTION:Chemical and Petroleum Industries at Newtown Creek (2022) blends history\, science\, and commerce along New York’s 19th-century waterfront. Inspiration for the book\, Professor Spellane explains\, began while participating alongside City Tech colleagues in an interdisciplinary 2008 National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant\, “Water and Work: The History and Ecology of the Brooklyn Waterfront.” Spellane’s study also draws on maps and period documents in collections at the New York Public Library\, the Brooklyn Historical Society\, the Cooper Union Library\, the New-York Historical Society\, the Library of Congress\, and other archives\, including a copy of an 1880s map of Newtown Creek in the library at the Brooklyn Historical Society that indicated waterfront locations of recognizable forerunners to several modern chemical and petroleum manufacturing companies.

SUMMARY:Works in the Works: The Process of Finding Your Niche
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Prof. George Garrastegui\, Communication Design Department \n\n\n\nThere is much to be said about why creatives create. Is it self-expression\, is it serving clients’ objectives\, or is it influencing others? It’s all of it\, but when we build campaigns\, media plans\, or convey brand messages\, too much relies on the external audience\, and we tend to forget why we’re in the room in the first place. Our unique stances\, insights\, and intuitions are what solve problems creatively—design your own possibilities by understanding your perspective and why it matters. \n\n\n\nWhere: In person: L-631 and Live Online via ZOOM \n\n\n\nAudience arrival time: 12:45–1 pm.Presentation start time: 1 pm \n\n\n\nAll are welcome! \n\n\n\n\nView Poster

SUMMARY:City Tech Community Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to share & learn about research\, scholarship & creative activity at the college!\n\n\n\nWe are excited to announce a new informal seminar series\, the City Tech Community Roundtable. The goal of the new series is to bring together faculty and students from all disciplines at the college and contribute to building\, or re-building\, the nurturing intellectual community that the last three years have made it difficult to have. Our meetings will be in person\, on the fourth Thursday of the month\, from 1 to 2pm\, in N227. You are welcome to bring your own lunch\, but we’ll provide coffee and cookies!Rather than a traditional seminar format\, we encourage shorter 15-20-minute informal talks (with or without slides)\, with a few speakers for each event; faculty and student teams are particularly encouraged to participate. We are interested in any aspect of your research\, scholarship\, or creative activity: share a result\, test run a conference presentation\, solicit feedback or collaborators on a specific idea\, try out a funding pitch\, or simply tell us about something you find interesting and you want to share with your community. We only ask that you keep your presentation approachable for faculty and students in different disciplines. \n\n\n\nAll self-nominations for talks are encouraged; our first dates are March 23rd and April 27. Please let us know if you’d like to give a short talk by filling in this brief form. You can volunteer for this semester or a later date\, so don’t be shy – we’ll make sure to pick a date that works for you. \n\n\n\nWhether you are planning to present\, please join us and invite your students and colleagues to join!

SUMMARY:Livable Cities
DESCRIPTION:What makes a city livable? Transport\, housing\, health. Open space\, mobility and the environment. Matters of culture\, entrepreneurship\, crime and safety. Affordability and access to education. Depending on whose ‘livability index’ you look at\, it may include design quality\, sustainability and the digital infrastructures of the smart city. Other criteria applied may encompass food access\, job opportunities or walkability. Inclusivity and the politics of participation also come into play. Discrimination in all its forms impacts livability and social and political equity. \n\n\n\nThe past two decades have seen an exponential rise of livability measures. Reflecting increased urbanity globally\, they risk making the notion of the city ever more contested. The two cities that host this event are cases in point. The Mercer Livability Ranking takes New York as the datum by which all other cities globally are graded – as better or worse. London\, by contrast\, measures itself: the London Assembly scoring everything from air quality to indices of deprivation. When we consider the livability of cities then\, it is clear we are dealing with a plethora of issues – both isolated and\, inevitably\, interconnected. \n\n\n\nFor  example\, affordable housing is a neighbourhood issue. It is often linked to other questions: walkability\, transport access\, food deserts\, and poor-quality public space. Equally\, the ‘Smart City’ can be treated as a technical issue. But it also raises questions of equality of access\, surveillance\, adaptive computing and human interaction – not to mention creative economies\, business innovation and entrepreneurial cities. \n\n\n\nThe design of our neighborhoods and buildings is connected to health\, wellbeing\, happiness studies and the ‘economics’ of healthy cities. In its turn\, crime and public safety affect design through practices such as defensible space. Infrastructural and eco-system resilience involves considering clean air\, water supply\, urban cooling and landscape infrastructure. Post-COVID-19 disruptions to work\, leisure and commuting methods require the rethinking of business\, architectural and infrastructural modes of operation. \n\n\n\nLIVABLE CITIES – New York\, is the first of two related events. Held in New York\, June 2023 it will be followed by LIVABLE CITIES – London in June 2024. In both New York and London we will examine the issues above from various angles. We will examine how we live in cities\, and how every issue we encounter morphs with considerations of others\, whether housing\, architecture\, urban planning\, health\, IT\, crime and safety\, city management\, economics or the environment. \n\n\n\n\nSubmit Abstract\n\n\n\nMore Information
