SUMMARY:Livable Cities
DESCRIPTION:What makes a city livable? Transport\, housing\, health. Open space\, mobility and the environment. Matters of culture\, entrepreneurship\, crime and safety. Affordability and access to education. Depending on whose ‘livability index’ you look at\, it may include design quality\, sustainability and the digital infrastructures of the smart city. Other criteria applied may encompass food access\, job opportunities or walkability. Inclusivity and the politics of participation also come into play. Discrimination in all its forms impacts livability and social and political equity. \n\n\n\nThe past two decades have seen an exponential rise of livability measures. Reflecting increased urbanity globally\, they risk making the notion of the city ever more contested. The two cities that host this event are cases in point. The Mercer Livability Ranking takes New York as the datum by which all other cities globally are graded – as better or worse. London\, by contrast\, measures itself: the London Assembly scoring everything from air quality to indices of deprivation. When we consider the livability of cities then\, it is clear we are dealing with a plethora of issues – both isolated and\, inevitably\, interconnected. \n\n\n\nFor  example\, affordable housing is a neighbourhood issue. It is often linked to other questions: walkability\, transport access\, food deserts\, and poor-quality public space. Equally\, the ‘Smart City’ can be treated as a technical issue. But it also raises questions of equality of access\, surveillance\, adaptive computing and human interaction – not to mention creative economies\, business innovation and entrepreneurial cities. \n\n\n\nThe design of our neighborhoods and buildings is connected to health\, wellbeing\, happiness studies and the ‘economics’ of healthy cities. In its turn\, crime and public safety affect design through practices such as defensible space. Infrastructural and eco-system resilience involves considering clean air\, water supply\, urban cooling and landscape infrastructure. Post-COVID-19 disruptions to work\, leisure and commuting methods require the rethinking of business\, architectural and infrastructural modes of operation. \n\n\n\nLIVABLE CITIES – New York\, is the first of two related events. Held in New York\, June 2023 it will be followed by LIVABLE CITIES – London in June 2024. In both New York and London we will examine the issues above from various angles. We will examine how we live in cities\, and how every issue we encounter morphs with considerations of others\, whether housing\, architecture\, urban planning\, health\, IT\, crime and safety\, city management\, economics or the environment. \n\n\n\n\nSubmit Abstract\n\n\n\nMore Information

SUMMARY:Works in the Works
DESCRIPTION:This month Christopher Swift\, Humanities Department\, will present “Performing Empire: Ritual\, Spectacle\, and Theatre in Late Medieval Seville” In this talk\, theatre historian Christopher Swift discusses the upcoming publication of his monograph. “Performing Empire” traces an historical arc during the period of Christian rule of Seville from 1248 to the conquest of the New World\, arguing that public performance was a vital means for Christians\, Jews\, and Muslims to negotiate and reform interreligious relationships\, enact social controls\, and preserve communal memories. “Performing Empire” investigates the accumulation of affects and signs in the play space of theatre and the very real consequences of these creative explorations across three centuries of Castilian hegemony and empire-building. \n\n\n\nHybrid event — save the date and watch your email for details!

SUMMARY:U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)-Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Minority Research Grant Program (MRGP)
DESCRIPTION:Overview of Webinar: \n\n\n\nMRGP provides funding opportunities to support health equity research conducted at: 1) Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); 2) Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs); 3) Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs); or 4) Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs). Through this funding opportunity\, the Minority Research Grant Program will make awards to eligible institutions. The purpose of theMRPG is to support researchers at minority serving institutions that are exploring how HHS can better meet the healthcare needs of CMS beneficiaries. The MRGP supports research on the discovery and characterization of health processes\, practices\, behaviors\, and burdens or issues related to CMS programs\, policies\, and operations\, that influence health equity. Funded research may comprehensively address the social determinants of health that drive or influence the barriers and opportunities populations described above experience related to CMS-supported benefits\, services\, and coverage. By focusing on understanding how inequities in communities impact health\, Funded research may also employ participatory methods that foster equitable engagement of affected communities in research\, such as convening and advisory board with community members\, community-based organizations\, and service providers. The three goals of the MRGP are to: 1) Develop capacity at minority serving institutions to research health disparities and social determinants of health; 2) Understand the root cause of issues – processes\, practices\, behaviors\, and burdens – that lead to health disparities and identify replicable interventions; and 3) Strengthen CMS programs by disseminating best practices uncovered through funded research. \n\n\n\nTargeted Audience: CUNY Social Sciences and Health Equity Research facultyPresenters: John Tsapogas\, Director\, RFCUNY-APPS and Josh Brumberg\, Dean for the Sciences\, CUNY Graduate CenterWebinar ID: 552-238-827 \n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:City Tech Community Roundtable – an opportunity to share research\, scholarship & creative activity!
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce a new informal seminar series\, the City Tech Community Roundtable. The goal of the new series is to bring together faculty and students from all disciplines at the college and contribute to building\, or re-building\, the nurturing intellectual community that the last three years have made it difficult to have. Our meetings will be in person\, on the fourth Thursday of the month\, from 1 to 2pm\, in N227. You are welcome to bring your own lunch\, but we’ll provide coffee and cookies! \n\n\n\nRather than a traditional seminar format\, we encourage shorter 15- 20-minute informal talks (with or without slides)\, with a few speakers for each event; faculty and student teams are particularly encouraged to participate. We are interested in any aspect of your research\, scholarship\, or creative activity: share a result\, test run a conference presentation\, solicit feedback or collaborators on a specific idea\, try out a funding pitch\, or simply tell us about something you find interesting\, and you want to share with your community. We only ask that you keep your presentation approachable for faculty and students in different disciplines. \n\n\n\nPlease nominate a colleague or let us know if you’d like to give a short talk by filling in this brief form. \n\n\n\nAll are welcome—please encourage your students and colleagues to come hear about the research and creativity of our campus community!

SUMMARY:BWRC Annual Conference: Hospitality In A Time of Plague
DESCRIPTION:THE BROOKLYN WATERFRONT’S HOSPITALITYINDUSTRY DURING THE PANDEMIC\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis full-day\, virtual conference will examine what the Covid-19 pandemic did to the restaurant industry along the Brooklyn waterfront through panels composed of industry leaders\, workers\, owners\, and city and borough officials. Panelists will speak about the steps that were taken to survive during the shutdown—re-purposing kitchens to accommodate take-out and delivery orders; hiring armies of deliverers and their ubiquitous electric bikes; building street sheds for those customers willing to brave the elements and the chance of infection; taking advantage of government programs; and numerous other schemes and plans. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP
