Seminar Objective
The seminar is designed to make General Education more visible in our classrooms and courses. Participants will explore, implement and assess a variety of teaching practices proven to engage students using ethical reasoning as our main focus.

At City Tech we define the student learning outcome of “Ethical Reasoning” in the following manner:

• Transform information into knowledge, and knowledge into judgment and action.
• Assume responsibility for social justice

Seminar Description
We are seeking full-time and part-time faculty members to participate in City Tech’s General Education Seminar in spring 2018. As a Living Lab General Education Seminar Participant, you will become part of the growing multi-disciplinary community at City Tech that is enthusiastically thinking about and developing general education, pedagogy and student engagement in their teaching and learning practices.
Participants in the Living Lab General Education Seminar commit to exploring innovative pedagogical approaches and incorporating what they have learned in their courses. Among the questions seminar participants consider are:
• What changes can we make to the student experience that will prepare our students to succeed at City Tech, while also supporting creative, original, and critical thinking through the use of high-impact educational practices?
• How can we use City Tech’s OpenLab, an open-source digital platform, to customize learning experiences for our students that will engage them in the intellectual fabric of our College and make their achievements visible to our own community and to the wider public?
• How can we use one of City Tech’s greatest assets — its location within the “living laboratory” of the downtown Brooklyn waterfront — to create hands-on, place-based learning opportunities with our students?
• How do we know our students are achieving the student learning outcomes of our course?

Eligibility
Participants in the Living Lab General Education Seminar – who may be full-time or part-time faculty members – will take part in five workshops during the Spring 2018 semester that focuses on

• General Education;
• George Kuh’s (AAC&U’s) High-impact Educational Practices;
• open pedagogy on City Tech’s OpenLab, our open digital platform for teaching and learning;
• place-based learning;
• assessment.

Participants will be inspired and supported by full-time faculty members, who are interested in sharing their own innovative teaching practices.

• both full-time and part-time faculty are eligible;
• available on Friday mornings in Spring 2018 semester to participate in five workshops (dates listed are subject to change);
• 9:00am-noon : February 2, March 9, March 23, April 13, April 27
• willing to work in a highly collaborative environment;
• willing to use the OpenLab (http://openlab.citytech.cuny.edu) for seminar-related activities and teaching (training and support will be provided);
• willing to prepare a final project (an exemplary activity that incorporates open pedagogy, place-based learning, high-impact practices and assessment practices using a standard template);
• willing to implement what you have learned in your classroom and on the OpenLab in Fall 2018.

Compensation
Full-time Faculty: Active participation by full-time faculty is recognized as progressive refinement of teaching practice or service to their department;

Part-time Faculty: Active participation by part-time faculty is recognized as progressive refinement of teaching practice and is compensated at their non-teaching rate for 15 hours.
