Over the past six years, City Tech and BMCC have joined in a cross-campus collaboration to improve STEM student success in critical mathematics courses. All too often these “gateway” courses function not as gateways but as barriers to progress and completion in STEM disciplines. With funding from the U.S. Department of Education’s Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions program (Title V), the Opening Gateways project has introduced open-source digital technologies, open educational resources, and active learning pedagogies into the sequence of high-enrollment math courses required for STEM disciplines at each college, impacting thousands of students. A key component is WeBWorK (https://webwork.maa.org/), a free, open-source online assessment tool sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America that can be used by any computationally-based discipline.
Join Opening Gateways team members and faculty participants on Friday November 19, 2021, 12pm-1:30pm to celebrate the project’s achievements, discuss lessons learned, and explore how Opening Gateways materials and approaches can be used to support student success across STEM disciplines.
