Abstract: This talk explores the competing ideologies presented by the 2023 film Barbie and its surrounding cultural narrative. Dubbed a “whiplash text,” Barbie critiques the personal and structural impacts of patriarchy while simultaneously insisting that a woman’s adherence to normative beauty standards and consumption of products is her route to liberation.
